Chapter 5. Second Thoughts
Willow had just gotten home from Buffys. Tara had already gone to sleep, but Willow wasn't tired. She went to her desk, which had a screen between it and the bed, so that if one needed to study and the other needed sleep, they wouldn't disturb each other. She turned on the light and started up her computer.
She had an essay due in two days, so she decided to get started. How did she manage to postpone it so long? She needed a disk to save the essay on, but there was nothing in sight. She started to look through her drawers, but there were no disks there. Instead she found the pez-witch Oz had given her, two years ago. A single tear ran down her cheek as she took it up.
She started to wonder about what had happened. Why did it have to go so wrong? Where could he be? She didn't know why, but she just didn't think. She picked up the phone and dialed a number, not remembering which one. As she heard the ringing, she started to wonder where her mind had gone. It was 3 am.
- Hello, a tired voice, sounding as the person answering had been sleepwalking towards the phone.
- Buffy, she asked.
- No, it's Dawn. Is it you Will? Do you know what time it is?
- I just remembered. Listen, can you go get Buffy?
- Sure, Dawn answered and disappeared from the phone. - Buffy!!!
Willow felt guilty, when she finally got an other tired voice in the phone, but this time she had to been sleepwalking.
- Buffy?
- ...
- Buffy?
- ...
- Buffy, can you give the phone to Dawn?
She heard the phone be given to someone else.
- Yeah, she heard Dawn say.
- Dawn, could you wake her up?
- Sure.
This time Buffy said something, when she picked up the phone.
- Hello?
- Hi, Buffy. I'm sorry to wake you.
- Willow, is something wrong?
- No... I just needed someone to talk to. Someone who isn't Tara.
- Why?
- Because... it's about Tara...
- Oh. Do you wanna come over and talk?
- I can?
- Sure, just... don't ring the doorbell, come right in.
- Thanks.
Willow put down the phone. Got her jacket and left the dorm. She did as Buffy said and walked straight in. Buffy had gotten dressed and was sitting in the living room. She looked at Willow.
- You've got tears in your eyes, did something happen?
Willow showed her the pez. Buffy just looked at it and mouthed "oh". She gestured for Willow to sit down. And she did.
- You miss him?
- Too much.
- What made you think about him? Except the pez?
- You actually.
- How?
- Remember when we were talking about your relationship with Riley, about you thinking you were using him, I think I'm doing the same.
- With Tara?
- Yeah. I always thought this was what I wanted, but I feel empty all of a sudden. I don't know why, really. I just feel no reason to continue this. It's not right for me or for Tara.
- Are you sure?
- Yeah, it's like you said. Nothing can ever replace the big love... For you it's Angel, but for me it's Oz. It's always been Oz. I was just leaning towards Tara because I was hurt and needed comfort.
- And Tara was right there, when you needed her.
- Exactly. And now, I don't know what to do.
- Go with your heart. No matter what you do, someone will be hurt. Actually. Tara will be hurt either way. If you leave, she'll be heart broken, but if you stay against your will, you wouldn't be fair to her.
- But what if Oz..?
- Don't say it, don't even think it. He never stopped loving you, just as Angel and I never stopped loving each other, even how hopeless we thought it was...
- You really think that he...
- Positive. The thing is that he loves you too much, that's the problem. Angel and I had the same. He left me so that I would get better, but he didn't know that he was the better and with you and Oz, it's the same. He first came back, because he had mastered the wolf, but then, when he got the impression that you and Tara had a good relationship, he left so that you would be happy.
- I know. I just wish I knew where he is? I mean, he may have moved on by now.
- Will, I don't think so. And even if he had someone new, I doubt it's true love. A heart isn't biggest thing in the world. It's impossible to room two true loves. I know so. I tried to open it up to Riley, but it wasn't enough space inside there.
- So you kinda would have needed a new hard-disk?
- Ok, computer Willow, I'm more with the primeval forces than new technology.
- Sorry. How about this: The room is too small so you need to tear down a wall to make it bigger.
- Exactly. And that means tearing down the love you already have. Nobody can do that. If they have, it's an illusion.
- I know. But how will I find Oz?
- You're the brain. What do you think?
- I don't know. Hire a private detective. Hey, does Angel charge much?
- Cordelia does, Angel doesn't.
- Huh?
- Cordelia plus money, equals huge bills. Angel on the other hand, wants to help people. But I doubt he'll find Oz for you. I mean, Oz went all the way to Tibet, the last time. Who knows, he may be anywhere...
- Yeah, maybe he's in Japan or Australia or even Norway for that matter...
- Where?
- Norway, a tiny country north in Europe.
- Oh... you know I slept through geography...
- Yeah, I know, I used to shake you awake every time the teacher asked you questions. I remember you answering that Norway was the Capital of Ireland...
- Hey, I'd been sleeping. I had no clue what they asked.
- Yeah, but I doubt the habitants in each of the countries would be happy to hear this answer...
- Lets just talk about something else...
- Yeah. The world is big. We have about six billion people to look among... I wonder if I can find a tracking spell.
- A what?
- A spell which shows me where he is.
- You can try. But first I think you should be honest with Tara. It's better that you do it now, than later...
- I know. I'll do it tomorrow.
Buffy suddenly yawned.
- I'm sorry I woke you, Willow said.
- It's ok. You needed to clear things up, but if you don't mind, I'd like not to sleepwalk to the bed...
Willow laughed at the comment, more than Buffy had expected.
- What, she asked.
- I'm just thinking about when you picked up the phone...
- What about it, I just said hello.
- No, Buffy. The first time, you didn't answer. The second time you didn't answer. The third time I asked you to give the phone to Dawn and you did...
- I did..? I don't remember.
- That's because you were sleeping.
Buffy smiled and shook her head. Willow got up and walked towards the door.
- Well, thank you. And good night.
- Night, Buffy said and sleepwalked up the stairs...
