At seventeen she'd had enough and ran away from home and ended up in a small town, named Stars Hollow, where she secured herself a job at the Independance Inn as a maid and moved into an old potting shed, which she made home for herself and her daughter the best she could. As time passed she worked her way up in the ranks, saving up money to buy her and her daughter, Rory a house, which they moved into when Rory was about eleven years old. Around the same time she became the Excecutive Manager of the Inn.
At first their interraction was simply one between a supplier and his annoying customer, who loved calling him 'Duke' just to annoy him. But as time passed it evolved more and more into a friendship. They would banter over coffee in the morning, when something broke, he would come over and fix it. Lorelai would encourage him to get out and interract with people from time to time. The whole town knew that Luke was having feelings for Lorelai, but both him and Lorelai would deny that anything was going on. It took the two of them years before they truly ackowledged their feelings for each other. Luke suffered in silence as he watched Lorelai date, get engaged to and almost marry Rory's teacher, Max. He watched in silence during Christopher, Alex and Jason. Lorelai tried to keep her claws in as she saw Luke trying to have a relationship with his ex-girlfriend, Rachel. Even more when Luke started dating Taylor's lawyer, Nicole and then marrying her on a cruise. Lorelai breaks up with Jason when he decides to sue her father. Not long after Luke gets a divorce from Nicole because she was cheating on him. Having a failed marriage behind him, Luke feels like he's a failure and he needs some guidance. And despite he hates the idea, he gets some self help books to give him some perspective. At first he finds the content ridiculous, but then one of the tapes acompanying the books lists up a lot of questions. Whose phonecalls are never unwanted or too long? Who does he want in his life to avoid loneliness? Who comforts him when he's in pain? Who does he want to share good news with? And whose face he sees when he's listening to those questions. The face he saw was Lorelai's and the next time he saw her, he asked her to go with him to his sister's wedding. Lorelai accepted, not sure what he meant as, if it was two friends going together or if he in fact asked her out on a date. Not sure what he wanted, she tried not to think about what she wanted. At the wedding they shared a dance and as he walked her home, they shared a moment. Just a couple of days later Luke came to the test run of Lorelai's new Inn and he brought her flowers, something he in a fight with her later the same night told her he hadn't done for anyone else before. A misunderstanding led Luke to believe Lorelai was back together with Jason and he felt stupid for asking her out since she was taken. When it was cleared up and Lorelai admitted to him that he wasn't the only one that felt that they had a moment, Luke finally kissed her at the front steps of the dragonfly and after only a couple of seconds Lorelai initiated the second kiss. Luke went away for almost the whole summer to help out his sister and her husband who had just been in a car accident, but before leaving he asked Lorelai not to change her mind about them. When he returned he finally took her out on their first date, where he showed her the horoscope she'd given him eight years earlier as a symbol of him being serious about wanting to be all in in this relationship. The next morning Lorelai stumbled down into the diner, only wearing Luke's flannel shirt, thereby accidentally revealling to the town that she and Luke finally were together. The issue of them dating was taken up at the next town meeting, where Luke basicly told the town to back off and that if by chance things went to hell, he would leave the town. Lorelai's parents didn't really accept Luke as Lorelai's boyfriend when they found out. As time passed and Lorelai and Luke grew closer and Emily saw signs that Lorelai possibly thought about settling down with Luke, Emily panicked and set a plan in motion. She went to Christopher to convince him that if he hoped for anything to happen between him and Lorelai he would have to act fast and he did. At Emily and Richard's vow renewal, Chris used everything he had to convince Luke that for Lorelai he was only a temporary thing until she was ready to settle down with Chris and Luke ended up believing it. Lorelai was heartbroken, shut her mother out of her life as well as Chris and she told Rory that Luke could've been the one. The town split into two groups, those supporting Lorelai and those supporting Luke. After a long time of her daughter not wanting to talk to her, Emily realized that she couldn't manipulate her daughter's choice of partner and she admitted her defeat to Luke, that Lorelai had made her choice and that she would no longer stand in their way. This was what convinced Luke that Lorelai in fact had chosen him over Chris and the two of them reconsiled. From that moment they were stronger than ever, looking forward at the future. For about a day Lorelai thought she possibly was pregnant, but it turned out to be just a fluke. She assument Luke wasn't much of a family man, and had no idea that Luke in fact had started looking into possibly finding a place for the two of them to make a life together, possibly have a family eventually. When Lorelai found herself in a position where it seemed like everyone was against her, she realized how no matter what Luke would be there and before she knew it, she had asked him to marry her. When he got over the shock, Luke said yes. Wanting to celebrate Lorelai took Luke with her to the town Gazebo where they toasted the moment. Later that same night, Luke told Lorelai about the house he had bought and then unbought and basicly revealled to her that he was thinking about having kids and Lorelai told him back that kids would be good. Understanding that the house Luke had in mind was a bit too big, Luke suggested to Lorelai that they could expand her house to make it big enough for the two of them, which was an idea Lorelai liked very much. Not wanting to exclude Rory from the wedding plans, Lorelai told Luke she didn't want to set a date until things were right with Rory. As that was happening, Luke found out the shock of his life, he had a twelve year old daughter, he didn't know about. As the revelation collided with things working out between Lorelai and Rory and Lorelai was so happy about that, Luke held off telling her about April. It wasn't until two months after that Lorelai finally found out and even though she was hurt about him keeping this from her, she decided to be supportive and even offered to postpone the wedding so that he could get the situation with April sorted out. Luke seemed reluctant to let her in on the situation and after a while admitted to Lorelai that he was afraid that once April met her, she would like Lorelai better and would no longer want to hang with him. However understanding that he in fact needed Lorelai's help, Luke caved and invited Lorelai to be a part of April's birthday party and he was proven that his worries had been for no reason. However April's mom had problems with Luke letting April meet his girlfriend and Lorelai decided to go meet Anna, to show her that she didn't have to worry. However Anna reminded Lorelai that engaged wasn't married and it said nothing about whether or not a relationship was stable, since people got engaged all the time and until she and Luke actually tied the knot, Anna didn't want April and Lorelai to hang out. Lorelai started once more to doubt that the wedding ever would happen. After finding herself talking to a therapist, where she talked about how she never had loved anyone before Luke and how she was ready to get married, have an other kid. The therapist told her that maybe it wasn't meant to be and that she had to figure out what she wanted and what she was willing to give up to get it. Lorelai had a breakdown, in which she gave Luke an ultimatum about marrying her, she was done waiting it was either now or never. When Luke said he couldn't just jump like this, Lorelai interpertated it as never and walked away. Not wanting to go be alone in her now expanded house, Lorelai ended up at Chris' house, telling him she just had a bad day and she just couldn't be alone right then. She woke up the next morning, realizing what she had done.
